Internship to support the Water and Security (WaSe) component of the WATER SUM project Position number: Intern 2016/2

The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe provides assistance in addressing environmental challenges by promoting cooperation among key environmental stakeholders, including governments, non-governmental organisations and businesses. Established in 1990 by the United States of America, Hungary and the European Commission, the REC is an international organisation, which, with its independent, non-partisan, non-advocacy, non-profit status, has become a model for open, efficient and accountable international cooperation. For more than 25 years the REC has maintained multi-stakeholder platforms and offered technical assistance to the countries of the region for fostering sustainable development, thereby contributing to the improvement of the environment, social cohesion, stability and well-being. The geographical focus of the REC’s operations is Central and Eastern Europe, South Eastern Europe and Turkey, and the countries of the EU’s Eastern Partnership and Southern Neighbourhood through its regional office network and its head office in Szentendre, not far from the Hungarian capital, Budapest.


Rapid depletion of water resources, deterioration of water quality, increased water demand and changes in water endowments are affecting environmental quality, food security, municipal infrastructure, and economic development in most societies of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The Regional Environmental Center (REC)[1 is implementing the project “Sustainable Use of Transboundary Water Resources and Water Security Management (WATER SUM)”[2] as a response to these developments. The project is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA)[3] for the duration of 36 months, from April 2014 to April 2017.

The overall objective of the project is to promote and enhance sustainable water resources management and to foster a comprehensive and integrated approach to water security and ecosystem services for sustainable development in beneficiary countries in the MENA region.

The project is divided into two components: “Water Resources Management Good Practices and Knowledge Transfer” (Water POrT); “Water and Security” (WaSe). The Water POrT component objective is to accelerate a more sustainable use of the region’s water resources and encourage a strategic approach towards adaptation to climate change; the WaSe component objective is to promote a comprehensive and integrated approach to water security and ecosystem services for sustainable development in eight selected self-governing territories in Jordan and Tunisia. The WaSe component is a part of wider efforts to: combat water scarcity; reduce the threat of conflict; halt the down spiral of poverty, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation; and increase overall human well-being within the wider context of ensuring regional peace and stability.

The project envisages the achievement of two main objectives:

  • increased capacities of the respective national authorities to apply an Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) approach, a framework for common understanding among water practitioners and stakeholders regarding the need for cooperation and a regional approach in managing water problems and strengthened, while strengthening the abilities of practitioners to deal with the impacts of climate change on the region’s water resources (WATER POrT component); and
  • the introduction and drafting of a Local Water Security Action Plan (LWSAP), initiated and supported in self-governing territories in Jordan and Tunisia, while communities work jointly towards sustainable development and local environmental governance in partner countries benefiting from the LWSAP concept (WaSe component).

As a result of the inception phase, Jordan and Tunisia were selected as focal countries for the WaSe component. Following stakeholder consultations in the initial phase of the project, eight self-governing territories were selected for LWSAP development:

  • Jerash
  • Al Salt
  • Ajloun

Delegations in Tunisia:

  • Nefza
  • Bir Mcherga
  • Matmata
  • Sidi Ali Ben Aoun

 Objective of the internship assignment

The main objective of the assignment is to support the project team in implementing project activities. In particular, this involves providing support in analysing and developing documents, and in organising and reporting on key project events.

Main tasks of the intern

The intern’s main tasks will be related to directly supporting the project team in the implementation of envisaged project activities.

Key elements will include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • providing support for project activities, drafting of reports and organisation of project meeting and events,
  • assisting with research and documentation regarding selected territories of the MENA region, based on needs;
  • assisting with on-job trainings for Local Water Security Action Planning;
  • drafting lessons learned and outcomes from the international conference “Water, Growth and Stability: Transboundary Water Cooperation for Sustainable Growth and Stability in MENA”, which will take place in Szentendre, Hungary on April 26-28, 2016;
  • assisting with the organisation of REC events during Word Water Week in Stockholm (late August 2016);
  • supporting and contributing to the Distance Learning Platform that is being developed to support project needs; and
  • helping to prepare and maintain project documentation.

Education and skill level required

  • University degree or equivalent (a higher university degree or equivalent is an asset) in a relevant field, preferably bio-environmental science, environmental management, engineering or economics/socio-political science
  • Solid knowledge of environmental situation and practices in general, particularly in the MENA region
  • Strong office management and administrative skills, including computer literacy
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Fluent written and spoken English (fluency, written and spoken, in Arabic and/or French is a strong asset)
  • Ability to work as a team player

Duration of internship and remuneration

  • 3 to 6 months, starting in May 2016 (with the possibility of extension, depending on candidate availability and project needs)
  • Stipend provided (details to follow from the REC’s HR Department)


The intern will be based at the REC Head Office in Szentendre, Hungary. The intern will be provided with logistical assistance for accommodation, if needed.
