Slovakia & Trends in Modern Foreign Affairs and Diplomacy: Twiplomacy and Modern Diplomacy Influencers
september 30 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
For centuries, information gathering and communication in the foreign-policy domain were under the exclusive bounds of diplomats, but today, foreign policy seems to reach every citizen much closer. Under their fingers, citizens are informed about activities of the global powers on the other side of the world.
More importantly, a framing of issue’s context influences public opinion directly every minute. As the politics develop under the scrutiny of such opinions, often directly reacting to online and live debates, strategic thinking in foreign relations is replaced by shortsighted and reactive echoes, even obscurantism. Everlasting topics that have been framing external relations of nations and diplomacy as their tools in the past are being transformed. Their complexity was streamlined and reduced, and if couldn’t be explained in a simple and common language, they directly face mistrust, conjecture and become a base of “alternative” explanations.
EURACTIV Slovakia invites you to the 1st from the series of three workshops, that will bring together diplomats and practitioners of diplomacy, journalists and digital/social media experts, and experts and researchers, exploring the factors influencing and shaping today’s foreign policy relations and its actors.
The 1st discussion/workshop of the series, focused on “twiplomacy” and modern diplomacy influencers, will look into how 140 characters (tweets and social media post) influenced the way influencers (celebrities, politicians, businesses, experts, journalists, etc.) determine state’s foreign policy orientation; how significant is their role (foreign policy strategy vs. decentralized actors); how technology influences diplomacy; what are factors of such “transparency” to modern diplomacy; and whether Slovakia is a special case, in which many politicians, many often unrelated to foreign affairs, keep on influencing foreign affairs of the country.
