IPI seeks a Data Analyst to support its programs administration and research at IPI’s office in Vienna, Austria.
About the Global Trends Unit

The IPI Global Trends Unit is an institutional department responsible for monitoring an analyzing contemporary trends to international peace and security, generating data-driven analytical insights in support of the work of IPI as well as the Independent Commission on Multilateralism (ICM).
The Unit complements the Institute’s research effort by providing timely and up-to-date trend analyses and strategic forecasts, embedding qualitative outputs into clear, presentable visualizations of global trends that affect interconnected areas of multilateral security. The Center feeds such information into the wide range of IPI’s programs, mutually reinforcing the overall quality of research and providing a guiding framework for the prioritization of global action for sustainable multilateral efforts. The outputs of the Unit are applied in designing appropriate policies by relevant actors engaged in emergency responses, peacebuilding efforts, as well as risk management and resilience building.
Responsibilities are under the supervision of the head of the Global Trends Unit and under the overall supervision of IPI’s Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
Responsibilities will involve a mix of research, data analysis and visualization, and program administration. Research and analysis will focus on quantitative data sources related to global trends and research issues as requested by the supervisor. Approximately seventy-five percent of the Data Analyst’s time will be devoted to sourcing, cleaning, structuring, organizing, visualizing and updating relevant databases and twenty-five percent to program administration and organizational support.
Research and data analysis

  • Monitor global trends and data on developments relevant to IPI’s work.
  • Strengthen the Unit’s expertise in trend analysis and strategic forecasting with an emphasis on developments related to issues if international peace and security.
  • Identify and harness relevant raw datasets and develop mechanisms for continuous clear and responsive data analysis to feed into IPI’s work.
  • Remain abreast of recent policy developments on multilateralism and regularly contribute data-driven analytical articles to the Global Observatory.
  • Provide a range of visually appealing static and dynamic visualization options for relevant datasets, allowing a user-friendly understanding of trends and strategic forecasts.
  • Deliver standard routine reports / dashboards on a monthly basis, consisting of an up-to-date visual presentation on global trends as well as other issues as required.
  • Work closely with team members and other IPI program staff to develop research projects, optimize and coordinate IPI’s quantitative research support, in particular with regards to programs dependent on effective strategic forecasting capacity.
  • Respond to ad-hoc requests for data, information and analysis.
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

Program management and administration

  • Support organization of program-related meetings, workshops, and conferences, drafting meeting agendas and concept notes, identifying and corresponding with speakers, in collaboration with the Events Team.
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring project-related budgets.
  • Draft and edit reports to donors in coordination with the Development Department.
  • Work with the Development, Events, and Publications Departments to maintain and update contact/mailing lists.
  • Coordinate with the Publications Department on production and dissemination of research publications.
  • Supervise interns, as needed.


  • BA required, MA preferred, in a quantitative discipline (mathematics, economics, statistics, psychology, research methods or related subject).
  • 2-3 years of experience working in a digital environment (data analysis and data visualization).
  • Demonstrated interest in international peace and security, diplomacy and multilateralism.
  • Strong analytical, writing and presentation capabilities and intellectual versatility, and an ability to understand data and turn it into information for analysis, forecasting and decision-making.
  • Strong statistical analysis skills and proven expertise/experience.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel, SPSS or Stata, SQL and other relevant tools for data analysis; good understanding of relational database principles.
  • Excellent knowledge of programming language(s) required for developing, maintaining and analyzing large databases and visualization of the data.
  • Demonstrated experience in gathering data, performing analysis, developing reports and creating visually appealing data-driven presentations.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including in finance, budgeting and program management.
  • Ability to lead and motivate staff and colleagues.
  • Ability to perform well and creatively in a fast-paced and high-pressure work setting and with colleagues from multicultural environments.
  • English proficiency required; and knowledge of a second UN language preferred.
  • Candidate must be prepared to relocate to Vienna.
