Trainee position: Recovering from COVID-19 across the EU energy system

The vacancy is within the Knowledge for the Energy Union Unit of Directorate C – Energy, Transport & Climate, with a mission to provide scientific evidence, through knowledge management, analysis and research, to EU policies related to the long-term energy & climate strategy and the delivery of the European Green Deal. Our staff (about 50) is mainly based in Petten (NL)

Short description of activity:

The COVID-19 crisis is far reaching, spanning among others from travel to health, employment to democracy. It is expected that significant efforts will be geared towards mitigating the effects of this crisis in the coming years. This traineeship is focusing on the efforts related to the energy system. This crisis has indeed already impacted and will have further significant impacts (direct and indirect) on the EU energy system, creating long-lasting disruptions.

The trainee will Contribute to the collection and analysis of ‘popular’ stories, visuals and infographics on the EU’s COVID-19 recovery programs, under the supervision of members of the Unit.

The tasks of the trainee will include:

  • The identification of and access to sources of relevant information;
  • The design of processes and learning of tools for the collection of stories, visuals and infographics;
  • The identification, retrieval, archiving
  • The analysis of specific topics based on material collected.

At the end of the traineeship, the trainee will have gained significant knowledge on the communication of measures targeting the EU energy sector for its recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, as well as an insight on knowledge management in support of policy making.



University degree in political sciences, economics, communication or engineering, with relevance to energy. Good command of English (level B2). Good IT skills. Very good analysis and synthesis skills. This is a collaborative project so good communication skills and a strong team-work ethic are required.


Familiar with energy technologies, energy trade, energy transition towards climate neutrality, international climate negotiation processes and foresight studies.
