The EIB, the European Union’s bank, in the framework of its GRAD programme is currently seeking to recruit for its Projects Directorate (PJ) – Environment, Climate & Social Office Division (ECSO) at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a:

Graduate (GRAD)

Appointment on this post is for a fixed period of 2 years

The post is situated in a team of Environment, Social and Climate Specialists within the ECSO Division. The Environment, Climate and Social Office is a team of specialists primarily supporting sectoral and investment teams in the environmental, social and climate appraisal and monitoring of EIB’s portfolio of operations and the custodians of the Environmental, Social and Climate Standards and Policy.


As a graduate, you will be under the supervision of an ECSO Specialist, supporting the work of the Division in the following areas:

Biodiversity and ecosystems:

  • Supporting the ongoing work for tracking biodiversity finance
  • Supporting the preparation of guidance for the implementation of the EIB Standard 3 on Biodiversity and Ecosystems including guidance on critical habitat assessments and offsets
  • Supporting the work on reviewing methodologies for the valuation (both ecological and economic) of biodiversity and ecosystems
  • Assisting the Project Teams in the review of Appropriate and Biodiversity Assessments in projects
  • Assisting in developing a biodiversity roadmap for the development of a Biodiversity and Ecosystems Strategy for the EIB.

Environment procedures and standards:

  • Developing environment and in particular biodiversity outcome and impact indicators to be included in the EIB’s Measurement Frameworks and for its reporting requirements
  • Supporting the further advancement of the Bank’s environmental policies, procedures and due diligence standards.

Other division-related tasks:

  • Supporting in the development of specific sector guidance notably on hydropower and climate
  • Conducting research and analysis on a variety of issues
  • Drafting reports, notes, briefings and promotional material
  • Organising ECSO’s internal Awareness Raising sessions


  • University degree in a relevant domain, e.g. natural, environmental, ecological sciences, environmental economics and/or environmental engineering
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Familiarity with French, German and Spanish would be an advantage
  • Familiarity with the EU environmental legislation in particular the EIA, Habitats and Birds Directives as well as familiarity with Multilateral Financing Institutions Environmental and Social Standards
  • Computer literacy


  • Excellent verbal and drafting skills
  • Highly developed sense of responsibility and initiative
  • Ability to work reliably and accurately under pressure
  • Ability to manage datasets, extract and provide data for analysis
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills
