The International Juvenile Justice Observatory (IJJO) is a Belgian Foundation of Public Interest based in Brussels. Since 2002, the IJJO has worked for the rights of children and adolescents at risk of social exclusion, especially those in conflict with the law or caught in the cycles of violence and juvenile delinquency.

Established in order to create a space for development, service provision and shared knowledge, the IJJO promotes and encourages the improvement of juvenile justice systems and policies, the implementation of international standards, the strengthening of professional competence in the field, and the exchange of innovative good practice.

We are looking for an organized and driven person to help manage institutional affairs and international policy agenda where the IJJO is involved, mainly those related with. The candidate selected will be part of the IJJO team in Brussels.

The Intern will be involved in the following:

  • Mapping international developments: UN agencies (ECOSOC, UNESCO, UNODC, UNICEF, ILANUD, etc) Committee on the Rights of the Child, Human Rights Council, etc.
  • Under the supervision of IJJO direction, monitor IJJO institutional relations with international organizations (with whom the IJJO has Consultative Status or similar);
  • Support the implementation of the IJJO’s international agenda, especially the work of its Asia-Pacific, African and North American Councils for Juvenile Justice
  • Ensure the liaison with national authorities, universities and NGO;
  • Assisting in developing advocacy strategies to influence the International agenda consistent with IJJO’s vision;
  • Assisting in drafting letters and papers as well as policy notes;
  • Conduct research on an ad-hoc basis to answer specific inquiries;
  • Assisting with the organisation of meetings and events in particular the upcoming meeting of the IJJO’s North American Council of Juvenile Justice;
  • Update and maintain some sections of the IJJO Web and database.


  • Minimum study level: university degree.
  • Specialization: International Relations, Political Sciences, Law, etc.
  • Excellent written and spoken skills in one of English, French or Spanish. Additional language skills in either of the others would be a plus
  • Good IT skills
  • Able to work independently as well as being part of a team.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in the work of international organisations/NGOs and advocacy.
  • Good knowledge of European and international institutions.
Internship term:

  • Maximum 6 months minimum 3 months (Flexible period according to the student’s availability).
