The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see the Internship web pages for further details).
The purpose of the programme is:
  • to provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole.
  • to benefit the IAEA’s programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.
The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.
Main Purpose
Interns will support the work of the Division of Human Health (NAHU) while gaining practical experience in various fields of Radiation Medicine or Nutrition.
Internships may be within one of the Division’s four Sections whose objectives are to enhance the capabilities of Member States to address needs related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health problems through the development and application of nuclear techniques within a framework of quality assurance.
As the Division of Human Health is seeking to create a roster of qualified candidates for internship opportunities arising during the course of the year, please ensure that dates of availability are included in your application.
Functions / Key Results Expected
  • Assist in the preparation of teaching and supplementary material;
  • Assist with the preparation of outreach materials;
  • Assist in analysing survey results and preparation of resulting reports;
  • Assist in the preparation of conference evaluation forms;
  • Research and collate data from literature on topics handled within the Human Health Programme;
  • Perform analysis of experimental data, prepare graphs, determine trends and present in the form of reports;
  • Contribute to the maintenance of medical databases;
  • Assist with preparation, implementation and reporting of meetings;
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the relevant Section Head.
Qualifications and Experience
  • University studies / degree in nutrition, environment, radiation physics, medical science, radiation oncology, radiology, nuclear medicine, biostatistics, biomedical engineering, health economics, health management, or any other health-related discipline;
  • Knowledge of statistical methods;
  • Experience using data management systems;
  • Experience in drafting documents and reports in English;
  • Experience of conducting literature searches;
  • Experience using Photoshop/InDesign an asset;
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
Applicant Eligibility
  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree.
  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the Agency’s internship programme.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian) an asset.
  • Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
Internships will be for a minimum duration of three months with a possibility of extension to a maximum total duration of one year.
