The Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, Office of Legal Affairs (DOALOS/OLA) is recruiting interns for the period from 1 December 2015 – 30 June 2016. We are seeking motivated graduate students who wish to gain professional experience in in ocean affairs and the law of the sea within an international organization in order to supplement their knowledge, skills and studies. This internship will provide practical experience in ocean affairs and the law of the sea and an opportunity to work in a multicultural, intergovernmental organization. Under supervision, interns are assigned to projects and tasks which will provide them with the opportunity to apply and further develop their knowledge in ocean affairs and the law of the sea.


Responsibilities of internship positions range widely, encompassing many aspects of DOALOS/OLA’s work.

These responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

• Assistance in conducting legal research on issues related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea using multiple research resources;

• Assistance in the review of legal documents, instruments or other material;

• Assistance in drafting and preparing official and legal documents;

• Attending and taking notes at conferences and meetings;

• Assistance in servicing conferences and meetings;

• Working on website and/or presentations;

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Office of human resources management

This position is located in the Office of the Director in the UN Medical Services Division (MSD), Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM), Department of Management (DM). The internship is UNPAID and full-time (five days per week), for a minimum duration of two (2) months and can be extended up to six (6) months.



Under the overall supervision of the Medical Director, the incumbent may have responsibilities which include, but are not limited to:

• Assist in development of critical health-related SOPs, plans and guidelines for the Medical Services in UNHQ and field duty stations.

• Assist in coordinating CME training sessions for medical and administrative staff

• Assist in IT-related projects including preparing and analyzing health-related data from online surveys, and statistical and epidemiological review of MSD data sets

• Contribute to the monitoring of latest health policy developments relevant for MSD;

• Assist in conducting research on other matters related to the work of MSD

• Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Office of human resources management

The Internships (multiple positions) are located in the Learning, Development, and Human Resources Services Division of the Department of Management. It is for a period of two months with an opportunity for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the division and availability of the candidate.

The internship is unpaid and full-time, with interns working five days a week (35 hours) under the supervision of a Unit Chief to whom they are assigned.


The selected interns will perform duties to include but are not limited to the following:

With daily guidance and tasking from key managers in the Human Resources Service, the intern is expected to track and follow-up all customer requests in a timely manner. The customers in question are staff members of the United Nations Secretariat for whom the Human Resources Service provides effective HR client services. The intern shall provide professional and courteous customer service to improve HR business performance. The successful candidate, who must be analytical as well as creative, shall:

a) Develop strong and trusted relationship with customers through timely and accurate communications;

b) Manage high volume of customer requests to ensure excellent customer service and satisfaction.

c) Address customer issues in accurate and timely manner and escalate matters that require further consultation to HR officers. Manage and log all customer inquiries, whether by phone or email.

d) Attend and conduct project status and review meeting with HR officers.

e) Maintain and update documents related to customer services reports on a periodic basis

f) Coordinate calls, meetings and communications between HR officers and customers.

g) Greet, address and thank customers during the business transaction.

h) Provide assistance to customers in a very pleasant and friendly manner.

i) Handle dissatisfied customers in a polite and professional fashion.

j) Maintain broad knowledge of HR policies and rules.

k) Perform clerical duties like photocopying and organising meetings as and when needed.
