is seeking to fill the post of

DIRECTOR of the GLOBAL POLICIES AND SUSTAINABILITY UNIT

The EEB’s Global Policies and Sustainability Unit was established in 2014 to strengthen the EEB’s engagement in global and regional environmental and sustainable development processes outside the European Union, following the integration of ANPED into the EEB.

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to the Secretary General, the new Director of Global Policies and Sustainability will have the following duties and responsibilities*:

  • Representing, or ensuring the representation of, the EEB and/or the environmental movement in key global and regional fora dealing with environmental and sustainable development issues, e.g. UNEP, HLPF, OECD, UNECE;
  • In collaboration with the Director of the EU Policy Unit, overseeing activities promoting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the EU and its Member States;
  • Overseeing the coordination of environmental NGO input into the Aarhus Convention processes at UNECE level;
  • Overseeing the EEB’s activities to promote stronger environmental policies in the EU candidate and neighbourhood countries;
  • Overseeing activities promoting environmental justice globally and challenging resource inequity through promoting sustainable consumption and production and highlighting environmental conflicts;
  • Collaborating closely with other stakeholder groups in the above tasks;
  • Leading and managing the GPS team (currently four other part-time staff);
  • Identifying and helping to secure sources of funding for the future work of the GPS Unit;
  • Representing the GPS Unit in the EEB’s senior management team and providing input on behalf of the Unit to various horizontal processes, e.g. applications, reporting exercises.

* The extent to which the new GPS Director will directly engage in the activities in the first five areas, in addition to overseeing them, is subject to discussion, depending on the qualifications and interests of the candidate and the availability of additional funding.

Qualities and experiences:

The incumbent should have:

  • A strong vision of what a transition to sustainability means, how it can be achieved and the role of civil society in general and the EEB in particular in this, as well as a good grasp of the environmental and sustainable development policy issues the EEB works on
  • Preferably, some familiarity with the specific fora where the GPS currently represents the EEB
  • Ability and motivation to advocate for a progressive agenda based on a global justice perspective
  • Strong management, supervisory and interpersonal communication skills, preferably with at least five years of work experience where these skills have been applied
  • Solid project and programme management experience
  • Strong networking skills, ideally already having contacts with key players in the relevant fora
  • Experience in fundraising
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English, fluency in other widely used European languages (including Russian) an asset
  • Prepared and able to work in a dynamic working environment, sometimes under pressure
  • Flexibility (we expect and offer flexibility regarding work schedules)
  • A firm commitment to the values the EEB represents
