CGIAR Research Program on Dryland Systems offers a summer internship: GIS (Geo-Informatics Systems)

Do you love to play with Geo-Informatics Systems (GIS) and have a passion for environmental issues? We are seeking a young Intern who is interested in an exciting GIS summer internship and a learning-by-doing experience with the CGIAR Research Program on Dryland Systems to contribute to the development of a web-based GIS platform on Sustainable Land Management (SLM) technologies and practices, and help us document and synthesize global SLM technologies and practices for sustainable development.

Description of tasks and responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Agricultural Livelihood Systems Expert at the Program Management Unit of the CPR-DS and the Head of Geo-informatics Unit at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), the Intern will be responsible for the following duties:
- Document and catalogue existing SLM technologies and practices available in the CGIAR Research Program on Dryland Systems according to specific program guidance and templates.
- Enter the catalogued SLM technologies and practices into a web-based SLM platform being developed and tested by the program.
- Link the catalogued SLM technologies and practices to program outputs (reports, publications, briefs, datasets, photos, tools, etc.) published on the online Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) system of CRP-DS.
- Learn about relevant methods, tools and skills used in a web-based information system environment and apply these to program efforts to develop a web-based GIS SLM platform under close supervision and guidance from experts from the CGIAR Research Program on Dryland Systems and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).
- Support the user-based testing and piloting of the above-mentioned web-based GIS SLM platform
Required profile and competencies
- Recently graduated or currently affiliated with an institution of higher education or research in pursuit of a Master’s degree in Natural Resources Management, Rural Development, Environmental Sciences, Agricultural Sciences or related field.
- Applicants must be familiar with Sustainable Land Management concepts and related international initiatives, such as World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT) and the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative, and demonstrate a keen interest and qualifications in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and technologies.
- Strongly motivated, open-mind to learn new knowledge and methods on a practical (learning-by-doing) and research question-oriented basis.
- Communication skills: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
- Excellent written and spoken English is required.
- Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve program goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for this internship. However, the applicant must have academic, technical or hands-on experience dealing with basic geographic information particularly in the areas of:
(a) spatial data analysis;
(b) cartographic production;
(c) spatial information databases; and
(d) spatial data dissemination. Hands-on experience in spatial database management, application development or GIS programming is an asset.
Good skills in geo-informatics are an additional advantage, but not a critical requirement as the Intern will engage in a learning environment about basic and web-based GIS operational skills.
Between 3-6 months to be mutually agreed and with possibility of extension depending on performance.
Terms of Internship
The internship position is based is based at our program headquarters at ICARDA in Amman, Jordan. A small monthly remuneration to cover costs of lunch and daily transportation to office will be provided. The intern is wholly responsible for all costs related to health, accommodation and visa expenses. Dryland Systems/ICARDA assume no liability for any accident, ill health or other misfortune that may occur. The winning candidate will report to the Agricultural Livelihood Systems Expert at Dryland Systems and the Head of Geo-informatics Unit at ICARDA.
