The Development and Outreach Division of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an intern for its Brussels office. Ideally, the intern will be available for four or five months beginning in January 2018. The intern will learn about and contribute to fundraising and outreach events, mainly focusing on the 2018 Annual Dinner in March, and the Ecce Homo Women’s Rights Summit in January.
Internships are unpaid. However, interns may be reimbursed for some lunch and local travel costs as pre-approved by HRW and in accordance with HRW policy. HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights.
Interns will gain knowledge and skills in event management, database management, fundraising, and prospect research. Interns will learn and contribute to creating creative materials for events, coordinating and engaging in donor communication, conducting research for development and outreach projects, and writing acknowledge letters and other correspondence.
This internship is best suited for individuals interested in gaining experience in a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. The intern will also learn about the organization’s priority human rights issues. In order to provide a valuable and well-rounded internship experience, interns will attend planning and department meetings with staff and will have the opportunity to take advantage of in-house trainings and briefings.
Applicants must be enrolled in a university or academic program for the duration of the internship, and must be required by their university to undertake an internship. We accept students who have secured external funding through grants or scholarships, such as the Erasmus+ program or other similar programs. Applicants should be detail-oriented, well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in international human rights. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. A good command of French and/or Dutch is preferred. Internet research skills and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, are essential. Data entry experience and familiarity with Raiser’s Edge or other databases are highly desirable. Experience in event management and relevant coursework are desirable.
