Description

Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) seeks an enthusiastic and qualified candidate to intern in the Children’s Rights Division. The selected candidate will primarily intern with the Children’s Rights researcher on the right to education based in London. The intern will focus on Human Rights Watch projects surrounding a range of issues related to children, particularly the right to education.

Responsibilities

Internships are unpaid. Interns may be reimbursed for their lunch and local travel costs as pre-approved by HRW and in accordance with HRW policy. Ideally, the intern will be available for a minimum of 15 hours per week or three days per week for a minimum of three months, starting from January 2017, subject to flexibility.

The internship will consist primarily of small research assignments, data management and analysis, news monitoring, drafting documents, and attending external meetings. Other projects can be assigned as they arise and match the intern’s interests and abilities. This internship is best suited for individuals interested in human rights advocacy and for those interested in gaining experience within a small office of a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. Interns will gain knowledge of current debates on children’s rights as well as knowledge of the organization’s priority human rights issues. Interns will also build skills in communications, advocacy, event management, and information tracking. There will also be opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights.

The ideal candidate should be well-organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented with strong time management skills. S/he should show interest and/or experience working in human rights, particularly children’s rights. Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills and must be fluent in English. Foreign language skills are highly valued. Internet research skills and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word and Excel, are required.
