The Conflict Prevention Centre (CPC) plays a key role in supporting and co-ordinating the OSCE’s activities in the field, in providing analysis and policy advice to the Secretary General and the Chairperson-in-Office (CiO) in relation to field-related activities and is the focal point in the Secretariat for co-ordinating and developing the OSCE’s role in the politico-military dimension.

 

Within the CPC, the Operations Service maintains a 24/7 Situation/Communications Room (SitRoom) which acts as a flexible emergency and crisis management support, serving as a vital link in the security chain between the Secretariat and the field operations. With a team consisting of 8 members (1 Chief, 1 Deputy Chief and 6 Duty Officers), the SitRoom carries out 24/7 open source monitoring of events affecting security and stability in the countries of deployment of OSCE field operations and other interest areas, acts as a focal point in times of crisis, and provides assistance in cases of emergency medical evacuations.

 

Tasks and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Situation/Communications Room the successful candidate will perform the following tasks:

 

  • Providing support to the team of Duty Officers;
  • Monitoring events affecting security and stability in the OSCE area, via media and other publicly available resources;
  • Tracking indicators in real time for the OSCE comprehensive approach to security;
  • Tracking early warning indicators, uploading relevant information in the database and collating information;
  • Compiling briefings and compendiums covering the most significant developments related to the scope and policy objectives of the OSCE, as well as special events occurring in the OSCE area of activity;
  • Carrying out other duties as assigned by the Chief of the SitRoom.

Necessary Qualifications
  • Applicants should be under the age of 30 and from an OSCE participating State with a background in political science, international relations, journalism, defence/security studies or related subject; students within one year of graduation from a university or other accredited institution of higher education at the graduate or postgraduate level, as well as graduates or postgraduates within two years of completing their degree, are eligible to apply;
  • Some work experience in the field of international relations, security and research would be an asset;
  • Professional fluency in English; knowledge of other OSCE working languages, especially Russian, is a distinct asset;
  • Strong research and drafting skills;
  • Knowledge of mapping programmes, as well as a good understanding of a variety of graphics programmes is an advantage;
  • Excellent IT knowledge, familiarity with Microsoft Office and Internet applications;
  • Good general knowledge of the OSCE and its activities is an advantage;
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing work environments;
  • Good organizational skills with ability to process and classify information quickly and efficiently;
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity, ethical awareness and an ability to integrate a gender perspective into tasks and activities;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people from different national and cultural backgrounds, whilst maintaining impartiality and objectivity.

Remuneration Package
The OSCE is not in a position to pay any remuneration or cover any expenses incurred by the intern during his/her stay in Vienna nor reimburse travel expenses. 

 

The internship lasts three (3) months and does not constitute a commitment to future employment with the OSCE.

 

The selected intern will participate in the group health insurance scheme at his/her own expense but the OSCE will cover life and disability insurance.
